What must a Lithuanian car sale agreement contain?
The essentials: both parties' names and personal codes, make and model, registration number, VIN, the owner declaration code (SDK) - without it the buyer cannot register the car with Regitra - mileage, price and settlement method, a list of known defects, plus roadworthiness and insurance details.
Why the “known defects” clause matters
It is the seller's most important protection: openly listed defects and an “as is” term stop later claims. But concealed material defects are different: the buyer may still demand a price reduction or termination after the sale.
Regitra deadlines
The seller can declare the sale to Regitra online within 15 days - after that, fines and charges stop falling on them even if the buyer delays. Cash settlement of 5,000 EUR or more is prohibited; more expensive cars must be paid by transfer.
Signed with a qualified electronic signature
Sign with Smart-ID or mobile signature. A qualified electronic signature has the same legal force as a handwritten one; the signing service is provided by Mark ID, UAB, whose information-security management system is certified to ISO/IEC 27001.
Frequently asked questions
Does a car sale agreement need a notary in Lithuania?
No. A simple written form with both signatures is enough.
What is the SDK code and why is it required?
SDK is the owner declaration code printed on the registration certificate. Without it the buyer cannot register the car in their own name at Regitra, so the agreement asks for it separately.
Can I pay in cash?
Up to 5,000 EUR - yes. From 5,000 EUR cash settlement is prohibited in Lithuania and the car must be paid for by bank transfer. The agreement handles both cases.
Does the agreement protect the seller from defect claims?
Partly. Openly listed defects and an “as is” clause protect against claims about anything the buyer could have seen. Concealed material defects remain the seller's responsibility - no contract removes that.
Who declares the sale to Regitra?
The seller can do it online within 15 days. It is worth not waiting for the buyer: once declared, fines and charges stop falling on you.
