Hiring your first employee in Lithuania, or signing an employment contract yourself? A sloppy contract can cost the employer a labour inspection and fines, and leave the employee with unclear rights. Our template covers every mandatory term of the Lithuanian Labour Code - in Lithuanian and English.
Mandatory terms of a Lithuanian employment contract
The Labour Code requires: the job function, the workplace and the salary. It is also essential to set the working-time norm, the contract type (fixed or indefinite), the probation period, leave and confidentiality. The employer must notify Sodra of the hire no later than one business day before work starts.
Gross or net?
Lithuanian employment contracts always state the GROSS salary - the figure before taxes. The employee takes home roughly 60-65% of it, depending on the tax-free allowance and pension contributions. Our tool makes this clear both while filling in and in the document itself.
Probation limits
Probation may not exceed 3 months - a longer clause is simply void, and it cannot be extended by agreement. During probation either side may terminate with 3 working days' notice.
Signed with a qualified electronic signature
Sign with Smart-ID or mobile signature. A qualified electronic signature has the same legal force as a handwritten one; the signing service is provided by Mark ID, UAB, whose information-security management system is certified to ISO/IEC 27001.
Frequently asked questions
When must the employment contract be signed?
In writing before the first working day. The employer notifies Sodra of the hire no later than one business day before work begins.
Does the contract state net or gross salary?
Gross - always. Employees take home roughly 60-65% of the gross figure, depending on the tax-free allowance and pension contributions.
What is the maximum probation period?
3 months. A longer clause is void and probation cannot be extended by agreement. During probation either party may terminate with 3 working days' notice.
Can an employer forbid joining a competitor?
Only with compensation - at least 40% of the average salary. A non-compete clause without compensation is void, and it is one of the most common defects in Lithuanian employment contracts.
How much annual leave is required?
At least 20 working days per year for a 5-day week. Entitlement to the first leave arises after six months of work.
Every clause is explained in plain language inside the tool; the document can be edited, extended with your own clauses and signed with a qualified e-signature. This is not legal advice.
